In this chapter we are going to discuss the following topics with examples.

  1.   Introduction
  2.   Types of Questions
  3.   Examples

INTRODUCTION

Element series is a series which consists of different letters (A to Z and/or a to z) , numbers (0 to 9) and symbols such as @, #, $, % etc.

You should know the difference between “Preceding” ,“Following” , “preceded by” and “followed by” to solve the problems in this category

Example:

Take two consecutive alphabets (eg: AB),

  1.  A is preceding by B
  2.  B is following A
  3.  B is preceded by A
  4.  A is followed by B

Take three consecutive alphabets (eg: ABC)

  1.  A is followed by B and C
  2.  A is immediately followed by B
  3.  C is preceded by A and B
  4.  C is immediately preceded by A

TYPES OF PROBLEMS

  1.   Finding Triplet
  2.   Find missing triplet
  3.   Odd one out
  4.   Element position

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together...

EXAMPLES

Directions to solve questions 1 to 4:

Study the following arrangement carefully and answer the questions given below.

                P  D  1  5  E  %  K  3  J  I  9  P  8  #  A  2  B  $  K  M  6  W  @  N  4  ©  T  λ  7  F  H

  1. How many such letters are there in the above series, each of which is immediately preceded by a symbol and immediately followed by a number?

          a) 2           b) 3         c) 4         d) 5

Answer: b)3

Explanation:

%K3,   #A2,   @N4

2. What should come in place of the question mark (?) in the following series based on the above arrangement? D5%, J98, 2$M, ?

a) @4T           b) WN©         c) N©T                   d) @4©

Answer : a)@4T

Explanation :

Alternate elements from the above series.

3. Four of the following five are alike in a certain way based on their positions in the above arrangement and so form a group. Which is the one that does not belong to that group?

a) BK2         b) EI%         c)J93          d) N©@          e) 4TN

Answer : b)EI%

Explanation:

All the elements follow the order +2 and -3. (ieB+2 =K, K-3=2 and so on.) But EI% follows +5 and -4.

4. Which element is 5th to the right of 17th element from right end?

a) P        b) 3       c) W        d) M

Answer: d)M

Explanation:

18th element from the right end is A. 6th element to the right of A is M. Alternate method is, subtract 5 from 17(17-5=12) and count from right end (given end).
