Why READing?

Reading is better learning. Because good reader learns better and gives the result better. Being a good reader has a comfort level in taking up RC questions without consuming much of his time, in bringing the sound of the words. And, RC is equally important as any other question type.

Reading complements our intelligence. All the successful people have proved to the world to be excellent text readers. Don’t forget the words of ‘David Bohm’.

Most of us know to read but how many of us really read or adapt to aggressive reading. To be an aggressive reader we have to know ‘HOW to READ?’


How to Read?

First start with the mantra READ MORE, constantly and repeatedly. Don’t be bothered about time, just read. Read whenever we have spare minutes. Without much reading don’t expect to marvel on the D-day of Placement. Unless you develop the habit for two hours of continues reading or reading at a stretch, don’t expect to take the name ‘Efficient and Rapid Reader’.

Slowly log on to the time or budgeting time. Take a book and tell to yourself of completing it before evening. This reading with ticking of clock will lead to develop different tricks of getting ahead. This will make you to read fast.

Reading fast will happen when you pace yourself. To get the concept of the book fast, set the time for the book, say 15 minutes. In 15 minutes count the number of pages that you have finished and multiply it with 4, say 10 pages multiply it with 4 gives 40 minutes, so that gives the potential speed of your reading of that book in pages per hour.  This simple action will devise you with the technique of fast reading with quick understanding.

Quick understanding is dependent on concentration. The main reason of being amateur reader is our laziness towards reading. Laziness comes because we read without picture of words or wander our thought while reading. Attention wandering puts our target down and keeps picking whatever comes in our mind. This diversion leads to poor understanding, or gives undomesticated result.

Undomesticated result will take out the assurance of Placements.


Pitfalls of READing

Many of us are concerned about the length of the passage, if size of the passage is big, we withdraw reading the passage.

Remember every author wants his text to be read and understood by the people to know about his perceptive on the topic. Be casual while reading don’t stress and highlight each and every word. Giving importance to all the words consumes our time and we regret reading the text. And, that ends up as slow reading or incomplete reading.

Slow reading because of reading disability or vocabulary.

Reading disability is lack of word decoding, or it is lack of ability to relate the word with the paragraph.

We can overcome reading disability by a correct posture of sitting while reading a book. This can actually enhance our concentration leading to an active mind. This will in turn make the book read more interesting by connecting the words.

Keep away from the television, the internet and the mobile phones. Switch off all these attention gatherer and stick to reading before an hour to sleep.

So, as far as reading is concerned it is not just reading but imparting the text into our mind.

Types of READing

Speed of READing

It is technique of processing large number of words in short durations. The processing of words happens with eye-span, the readability comfort in one glance without shift in focus. The comfort of read comes by implementing the technique of ‘slash method’ (/).Slash method will make us to sense longer sentences into phrases instead of word by word.

Example

Speed Reading can help us /to read and understand/ written information/ much more quickly./ This makes it an essential skill/ in any environment /where you have to master/ large volumes of information quickly,/ as is the norm /in fast-moving professional environment.

So, ‘slash method’ can be taken in newspaper reading, because of narrow columns. That will lead involuntarily to fast reading.

Most graduates have a speed of reading 250 words per minute (wpm). Though it is not bad but test takers should take it to 300wpm. For difficult and for hard passage, we can force speed of reading to 100wpm.

And, to facilitate fast reading avoid vocalization. Vocalization is reading aloud and unnecessary because reading is mind grasping the words. Whereas, vocalization involves three input- seeing through eyes, reading by using vocal cord, and listening with ears. Because the problem is one can’t speak 400-500wpm. So get rid of Vocalization.

Practice by taking Sub-Vocalization– Speaking the words in one’s mind means words travelling eyes to mind, the direct transference. Aim at minimizing sub-vocalization because not each and every word needs the transfer. Minimize sub-vocalization by reading a lot rather than through conscious effort.

Bring sense of urgency while reading. When we studied for examination we were able to complete the syllabi in shorter time with greater understanding. Sense of urgency we will be able to double our reading speed as well as our understanding.

 

Effective READing/Active READing

Effective Reading is active participation of reading the text in order to pick the main points that the para has rather than to passively waiting for the text to communicate the points to us. Effective Reading makes us to pay attention to the hierarchy in which the main points occur and the purpose of the structure. So, practice active reading to excel in Placement Tests.

 

Other Reading: Skimming and Scanning

Skimming should happen after reading and understanding the questions and their purpose. Skimming is structuring the paragraph to read or to discard. Immediately after skimming, scanning should take over before answering. So, scanning is to locate specific information in the passage while answering a question. If you have the background information of the topic, directly include with skip and scan method.
